The way that the police have practiced narrativizing their actions on fast media formats should be indicative of a systemic problem.
If you have a working script up and ready to explain the violence you just did, then you’re regularly premeditating your violent acts. If time and labor are put into these acts of misdirection because public opinion effects accountability, then you are effectively conspiring to abuse power.
The problem is…this will work because it ties into three existing tropes that Americans will accept as an excuse for retaliation:
[thing] is terrorism and thus justifies anything;
[thing] is sign young people are being so stupid they have to be sharply corrected so they can “understand”;
and
[thing] is disruptive and unaesthetic and therefore cannot have any value.
We’ve spent decades training people to view protesting as a sign of weakness, rudeness as a sign of invalidity, and collective action as sinister. The de jure right to protest cannot stand straight checked by the cultural force of the American desire to not care and never be called out for not caring.
Fascism doesn’t gain ground because people become utterly convinced, but because it’s solutions to complicated problems are attractive to the those that don’t want to think any more and those that think that talking about problems is the real problem.
It’s not just that people don’t want a nuanced understanding, it’s that they’re actively rejected a nuanced understanding: the world is an easier place to be in if the cops are always justified and the protesters are whiny privileged naifs that understand nothing of the world but are also irretrievably evil organized terrorists sympathizers…impossibly strong and pathetically weak at the same time, you might say.
Nobody gave a shit that Portland kicked off because of Patriot Prayer having free reign to assault people because the cops were hands off with the white guys driving in from other regions to attack queer people, they just cared that the protesters looked angry and ugly.
Nobody gave a shit about “hateful rhetoric” when it was Christian white dudes invited to campus; quite the opposite, we were told that openness and civility meant respected the men on stage and the goons that came with them when they discussed whether women were people, LGBTQ were crazy, and Muslims were antithetical to Western Civilization.
A nation’s values are not what they declare them to be, but what they allow happen unremarked.
I was going to look up the New York Post and see what other shrill sensationalism they were offering. I absent-mindedly typed “New York Pest” into the search box, this completed itself as “New York Pesticide,” and I got a list of bug and rodent eradicators in NYC.

I remember following the Operation Wall Street protests that were at Liberty Park adjacent to the WTC complex, and camera crews were there almost nonstop. It was impossible not to get photographed if you were encamped there.

One of Minnesota’s oldest bankruptcy law firms has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after losing a five-year legal spat with another bankruptcy law firm over mutual claims of false advertising and “click fraud.”
St. Cloud-based LifeBack Law Firm, which has eight Minnesota offices, filed for protection from creditors Saturday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Minnesota. The petition notes LifeBack owes $290,000 to Hoglund, Chwialkowski & Mrozik, part of Hoglund Law in Roseville.
LifeBack President Wesley Scott could not be reached for comment.
According to the bankruptcy filing, the money owed to Hoglund stems from a court-approved arbitration award.
The bankruptcy filing is the culmination of a legal wrestling match that dates back five years.
In January 2019, Hoglund first sued LifeBack in Hennepin County District Court alleging false advertising, unfair enrichment, contract interference and deceptive trade practices.
Hoglund mainly contended that LifeBack, formerly Kain & Scott, had engaged in a costly scheme of “click fraud.”
Hoglund accused LifeBack’s President Wesley Scott of “excessively” clicking on trigger words on the Internet in an effort to force Hoglund’s paid advertisements to appear again and again on the screen. The repetitive action was allegedly intended to interrupt Hoglund’s online marketing efforts and to make the law firm quickly spend through its entire Google advertising budget and render its advertisements mute.

One very important difference between Operation Wetback and current border policy is that the former was carried out with the cooperation, and participation, of the Mexican government. The latter was concerned about a severe labor shortage on large Mexican farms, which affected the landed aristocracy by forcing them to either compete with American wages or let their crops rot.

I’m fascinated by the distinction of how collective guilt is attributed.
All protesters are culpable for what some protesters say…but more deeply, what people say when they’re angry and keyed up in a crowd is them revealing their true ugliness such that they can be discounted.
Government officials with a knowable track record of words and deeds, like Smotrich and Ben Gvir, though, can say whatever they want from a podium and it is somehow impolitic to suggest that their stated ideological positions might be reflected in choices made in the war they’re directing.
It’s 2003 all over again: the government are crooks and reactionaries working in tandem but if you point out that this is meaningful context for their choices, that it is in fact valid to question their actions given their history, then you’re failing to understand that the emergency is so large and the bad-feelings so intense that any cost
as long as it is paid mostly by people that do not matter, who in the mind of the rhetorician are…not a loss
must be borne because the enemy is too malefic for conventional questions about collateral harm and human dignity to be relevant.
The same people that were pounding the table then are pounding the table now because, they argue, the crime was so heinous that the response must be held outside of systems of criticism and accountability.
And just as back then, they are not arguing this in exclusion, but as part of a larger worldview in which spillage of human life is simply a thing that must occur along the path to creating a world order that rewards the good kinds of people. This is passively accepted by Americans—it is acceptable that our lives are putatively “protected” by a constant flow of civilian casualties overseas because there is no alternative—but in our domestic politics more and more variants of “what if these deaths are just unremarkable, the cost of doing business” are cropping up: it’s built into homelessness discourse, into the prison-labor complex, etc. The definition of “terrorism” has been getting broader since BLM and Portland, and what is trying to categorized how is demonstrative of how this is all reaction posing as self-defense.
At the bottom of it all, the distinction is the point. No one that argues the utilitarian efficacy of killing one Hamas member with a bomb that levels a whole occupied building would accept that logic being applied to their loved ones, or even their nation. But the world is now burning enough that normies smell the smoke, and the fastest way to feel safe is to imagine that the suffering over there has no relevance to what might happen over here…and if you could inflict just the correct kind of harm to the right people
obviously no one you have community or connection with, other kinds of people that you feel are quite different
then you might be able to avoid suffering.

I’m seeing very many of the same crowd that duped me back when; for some things never change. Personally I’ll be working on atonement for being one of the voices that got American into the longest war in our history for the rest of my life, and yet still never make up for it.

Butter is white in winter, unless something is done to color it. This is more of the same. (I haven’t seen a blind test to compare the flavors, and I wouldn’t trust anything else.)

Since these takeovers, party leadership has engaged in egregious unethical and corrupt behavior, has maligned libertarians across the world, and misused donor funds.
One year E.P. and Dorothy Thompson were visiting professors at Pitt. They taught several classes about British History. Memories of the head of the Young Libertarian Alliance challenging E.P. about his Marxist views. E.P. knew the guy was the head of the YLA.
E.P. delivered an immortal response that American Libertarians were the Cole Porter Party because with them “Anything Goes”.
We got a good belly laugh from that!
